KTHSMB General Manager Receives WACS Accreditation Team for Postgraduate Radiology Training Programme Assessment at GARSH
The General Manager of the Katsina State Hospital Services Management Board (KTHSMB), Dr. Muhammad Nazir Shehu, received the accreditation team from the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) for the assessment of the Radiology Department at General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital (GARSH), Katsina, as part of the College's accreditation process for postgraduate medical training.
The accreditation exercise represents another significant milestone in the Katsina State Government's commitment to strengthening specialist medical education and improving healthcare service delivery through sustainable capacity building.
The accreditation team comprised distinguished medical professionals from leading healthcare institutions in Nigeria:
- Prof. Abiodun Oludotun Adeyinka – Chairman, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan
- Dr. Aisha Akintobi – Secretary, National Hospital, Abuja
- Prof. Muhammad Ibrahim Zakari – Member, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria
The accreditation exercise is in line with the vision of the Katsina State Government, under the able leadership of His Excellency, Malam Dikko Umar Radda, PhD, CON, to expand and strengthen postgraduate medical training in state-owned healthcare facilities.
The initiative is designed to build specialist manpower within the state's health sector while ensuring that medical doctors pursuing postgraduate residency training continue to provide quality healthcare services in government hospitals.
This approach offers significant benefits to the state by reducing the financial burden of sponsoring doctors to train outside Katsina State, while simultaneously enhancing healthcare delivery through continuous specialist services. It is a win-win arrangement where doctors advance their professional careers while remaining in active service to the people of Katsina State.
As part of the accreditation exercise, the WACS panel held an interactive session with the management team of KTHSMB, where they met with directors from various departments to assess institutional readiness and administrative support for postgraduate training.
The meeting was attended by directors responsible for: Medical Services, Nursing Services, Finance and Accounts, Pharmaceutical Services, Medical Laboratory Services, Planning, Research and Statistics, and other key administrative and clinical departments.
The discussions focused on human resources, infrastructure, clinical training capacity, equipment, institutional governance, and other critical requirements necessary for successful postgraduate residency training.
The accreditation team also paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Hon. Musa Adamu Funtua, as part of the assessment programme.
The delegation was accompanied by the General Manager of KTHSMB, Dr. Muhammad Nazir Shehu, alongside members of the Board's management team. During the visit, discussions centered on the Katsina State Government's unwavering commitment to improving specialist healthcare services, strengthening residency training programmes, and investing in the development of a highly skilled healthcare workforce.
The Honourable Commissioner reaffirmed the government's support for initiatives that enhance medical education and improve the quality of healthcare services across the state.
Speaking during the accreditation exercise, Dr. Muhammad Nazir Shehu expressed appreciation to the WACS accreditation panel for their visit and thorough assessment. He reaffirmed the Board's commitment to providing the necessary institutional support to ensure successful accreditation and the continuous development of specialist medical training programmes.
He emphasized that investing in postgraduate medical education remains one of the most effective strategies for improving healthcare delivery, retaining skilled professionals, and building a resilient healthcare system capable of meeting the growing health needs of the population.
The accreditation of the Radiology Department at General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital marks another important step in Katsina State's journey toward becoming a recognized centre for postgraduate medical education.
